Hi, AfDers and friends,
Two notes:
1. Normally AfD has a chapter meeting the second and fourth Monday of each month. The second Monday is tomorrow, Monday, Oct 13. WE WILL NOT BE MEETING. Our next meeting will be on Monday, Oct 27th.
2. Alliance for Democracy has worked on enactment of a City of Portland ordinance to make Portland a Sweatfree City for several years now. We and our allies were successful over a year ago in getting the city to pass a landmark resolution that set in motion a process to create a city policy for ethical purchasing. The process is complete and the City council is set to vote on the final resolution on Wednesday. See notice below from SweatFree Portland for details.

Hi Friends!
Thanks to your collective effort as dedicated volunteers, endorsers and Portland Sweatfree Policy Committee members, next week we will call on our political representatives in council to make Portland the first city in the Northwest to pass a sweatfree ordinance!
We go before city council Wednesday, Oct. 15th with a strong code of conduct, clear and enforceable policy and a reaffirmed commitment to a Sweatfree Consortium to ensure policy enforcement along side a local Sweatfree Oversight Committee with over 50% worker advocate representation.
Come celebrate this cornerstone victory as Portland leads the way for a groundswell of sweatfree movement in the Northwest! If you would like to help spread the word, please find attached flyers and invite blurb below.
All the best,
Elizabeth Swager

Important Hearing for Sweatshop-free Portland
Wednesday, October 15th 2008
9:30 AM
Portland City Hall, 1221 SW 4th Ave.
On Wednesday the 15th, we will see the much-awaited Portland Sweatfree Policy go before City Council for a vote!On August 29 2007, many of you packed the Council Chambers for a climactic hearing, where the Council passed a resolution to help fund sweatfree enforcement and to form a policy committee with strong worker advocate representation to develop a strong policy to make Portland's city purchasing sweatshop-free.
Now we need your support more than ever to bring the struggle in Portland the last leg of the way to victory as we return to council with a sweatfree policy including strong codes of conduct that will fight worker abuses such as twenty-hour shifts and seven days a week of work, toxic fumes and other dangerous conditions, verbal harassment and public humiliation, and poverty wages.
Come support this huge step forward for the City to strengthen labor standards and to make Portland Sweatfree!
