9-30-08/Call to Action: Bail Out Main Street, Not Wall Street! Oct. 1, 5pm, Federal Building
Hi, Again AfDers and friends,
Call to Action: Bail Out Main Street, Not Wall Street! Oct. 1, 5pm, Federal Building
David e. Delk, Alliance for Democracy - Portland Chapter 503 232 5495 www.afd-pdx.org
"Stop Corporate Greed" Rallies planned across Country
Coalition says: 'Bail Out Main Street before Wall Street"
WHAT: Across the country, community and worker advocates will conduct rallies, street theater, bake sales and 'billionaires for bail-outs' actions to tell Congress and Wall Street that people are fed up with corporate greed and demand a "Main Street Recovery Plan."
Portland Jobs with Justice is organizing a rally at the Federal building with community leaders and people affected by the economic crisis. We are calling on our friends and allies to join us in demanding a real recovery plan that addresses the needs of working people.
WHY: The bail-out "compromise" failed largely due to overwhelming opposition from communities and progressives, because it did not address the needs of Main Street and constituted another give-away to the wealthy. Jobs with Justice is telling Congress:
· Make the people that created and profited from the mess pay for the clean-up, now.
· Any infusion of capital must have specific, binding public ownership requirements
· Restructure and rein in the reckless private financial institutions
· Pass a real recovery plan, for Main Street as well as Wall Street, paid for with progressive taxation, that addresses the needs for good jobs, affordable housing, health care, pensions, infrastructure and 'green' economy
(Note from David Delk: In addition to the Why above, we should insist that part of the cost of "correcting" the current crisis should include a Financial Transaction Tasx or Fee. see http://www.greenchange.org/article.php?id=3263 or http://newrules.org/finance/tobin.html)
WHEN: Wednesday, October 1st, 5pm
WHERE: Federal Building, SW 3rd and Madison, Downtown Portland
WHO: "Jobs with Justice" is a coalition of community, faith-based, labor and student groups that promotes economic justice and worker rights.
VISUALS: Banners, Signs, "Stop Corporate Greed" posters, and lively and creative local art pieces
