Hi AfDers and friends,
Alliance for Democracy is sponsoring a series of films focused on the use of non-violence to achieve social change called A Force More Powerful. These films will be shown on 4 Wednesdays in Sept and Oct.
Location: Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave. (that is on the #19 Glisan bus line)
Time: Start at 7 PM sharp (well, we will try to start on time).
Discussion: to follow the movie each evening
Here is the schedule:
Sept 10th
Gandhi: First is the story of Mohandas Gandhi as he steers a shrewdly strategic, ever-escalating course of "noncooperation" including mass demonstrations, strikes, and the boycott of British goods to eventual independence.Nashville: The second film shows historic footages of the 1960 sit-ins and boycotts that desegregated downtown Nashville, Tennessee using Gandhian training in non-violence.
Sept 24th-
Yugoslavia: "Bringing Down a Dictator" is the story of non-violence and democracy in the displacement of Slobodan Milocevic, "The Butcher of the Balkans." The overwhelming support for the democratic process is shown in rousing historic footages
Oct 15th-
Denmark: Prior to WWII, the Danish resistance to the Nazis saved over 7,000 Danish Jews virtually overnight. See how a largely complacent nation banded together to non-violently subvert fascism.
Poland: In 1980, striking workers in Poland demanded independent unions. Using their leverage to negotiate unprecedented rights in a system where there was no power separate from the communist party, they created a union, Solidarity. Driven underground by a government crackdown in 1981, Solidarity re-emerged in 1989 as Poland's governing political party.
Oct 29th-
South Africa: The 1985 non-violent mass-action campaign against legalized discrimination known as apartheid awakened whites to black grievances and fatally weakened business support for apartheid.
Chile: In 1983, Chilean workers initiated a wave of nonviolent protests against the military dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. Severe repression failed to stop the protests, and violent opposition failed to dislodge the dictatorship - until the democratic opposition organized to defeat Pinochet in a 1988 referendum
