The original populists identifed the east coast banks and the railroads as the cause of their detrirorating economic positions and set out to create a new political party, the People's Party (aka The Populists) to be their poilical voice. They undestood that the Democrats and the Republicans were beholden to big money private interests and organized not against the government but against the corporations.
