Oregon Experience - Wayne Morse

Wayne Morse served four terms (1945 -1969) in the US Senate.  He represented Oregon with brilliance and bravado and followed a vision of “principle above politics.”  He could be quick to criticize, and he rankled many opponents.  But he wrote and sponsored legislation that was well ahead of its time.

Morse also warned of an American war in Viet Nam -- a full decade before an incident in the Gulf of Tonkin formally started it.  He was one of just two members of Congress to vote against it.  And for the rest of his career,  Morse led a national outcry to end the war and bring the troops home.

Trade Justice Roadshow:
Corporate Globalization & the Trans-Pacific FTA

Learn about what the massive new Trans-Pacific Free Trade Agreement means for your community, and how you can help prevent this “NAFTA of the Pacific.”

The Trans-Pacific FTA is being negotiated behind closed doors between a dozen countries throughout the Pacific Rim.  Journalists, most Members of Congress and the people most likely to be impacted by these negotiations are barred from reviewing the U.S. proposals, but approximately 600 corporate lobbyists certified as official “citizen advisors” have regular access to both the negotiating documents and the negotiators.

Join us as we learn more about this pact; about the impact of past trade deals on our communities; and to send a message to Senator Ron Wyden and other elected officials that we will not accept another business-as-usual trade pact that offshores jobs, reduces the tax base and puts a downward pressure on the wages and benefits of jobs that are left.

Rally/March – Shut Down the Corporations
Leap into Action!  Reclaim our Future!

– national day of actions against the 1%,  (Occupy Portland, www.shutdownthecorporations.org)

Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations.  We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future. We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction.

We call on people to target corporations that are part of the American Legislative Exchange Council which is a prime example of the way corporations buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves the interests of corporations and not people. They used it to create the anti-labor legislation in Wisconsin and the racist bill SB 1070 in Arizona among so many others. They use ALEC to spread these corporate laws around the country. Read the full call to action here.

Benjamin Ginsberg Lecture:  The Fall of the Faculty

Until very recently, American universities were led mainly by their faculties, which viewed intellectual production and pedagogy as the core missions of higher education. Today, as Benjamin Ginsberg warns in his controversial book, The Fall of the Faculty, “deanlets”–administrators and staffers often without serious academic backgrounds or experience–are setting the educational agenda.

The Fall of the Faculty examines the fallout of rampant administrative blight that now plagues the nation’s universities. In the past decade, universities have added layers of administrators and staffers to their payrolls every year even while laying off full-time faculty in increasing numbers–ostensibly because of budget cuts. In a further irony, many of the newly minted–and non-academic–administrators are career managers who downplay the importance of teaching and research, as evidenced by their tireless advocacy for a banal “life skills” curriculum. Consequently, students are denied a more enriching educational experience–one defined by intellectual rigor.

As troubling as this trend has become, there are ways to reverse it. The Fall of the Faculty outlines how we can revamp the system so that real educators can regain their voice in curriculum policy.

Benjamin Ginsberg is the David Bernstein Professor of Political Science, Director of the Center for the Study of American Government, and Chair of the Government Program of Advanced Academic Programs at Johns Hopkins University.

Casualties of Iraq 9 Years Later: US Out!

A visibility action on the ninth anniversary of the invasion

The Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group (IAG) is planning an event on Tuesday, March 20, the 9th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, to educate the public that despite claims to the contrary, the US is not fully withdrawn from Iraq. The visibility action, titled "Casualties of Iraq 9 Years Later: US Out!", will take place from 3:30-6:30 PM at SW Yamhill and Broadway. Even with American troops gone, 16,000 US personnel (including 8000 "contractors") and 700 "military advisors" are still there. In addition, as the troops rolled out, US corporations rolled in, including General Electric and ExxonMobil.

"The US has been intervening militarily since 1991 and economically even longer; it is time to leave Iraq to the Iraqis and bring all the troops, contractors, and our War Dollars home," said Dan Handelman, an organizer with the IAG.

he event is being cosponsored by American Friends Service Committee, Alliance for Democracy and others.

Community Assembly to Create A People's Budget

Occupy Portland’s Labor Solidarity Committee invites all people to join us in a Community Assembly to create a people’s budget that works for all of us. Our intention is to launch a campaign and action plan to achieve a city budget and spending proposal that addresses the primary concerns we all share, such as jobs, no cuts to services, housing, transportation, health care, education, etc. We plan to outreach to labor unions, community groups, Occupy, and the broader 99% to join us in a fightback against the planned city cuts to essential services, while putting forth a budget for the 99%.
